As a rabbi, Jesus often taught in the synagogue in Capernaum where he lived. Synagogues were Jewish places of prayer and teaching that developed during the exile while Jews lived outside Israel. Being prohibited from work on the Sabbath (Saturday), Jews came to the synagogue to be taught and connect with God and others (Ex. 20:9, 10). People are made to connect in community (Heb. 10:25)! Often, teachers and scribes would read scripture and give commentary and application based on the opinions of other teachers. But Jesus taught scripture not as traditions of men, but as the living power of God (Matt. 15:9; Heb. 4:12). People were amazed to hear the words of God with the authority (Gr. exousia, ‘privilege proven from strength’) of God! If there is no power, there is no point!
