Because of foreign rule and Daniel’s prophecy about the coming of the Messiah, Jews throughout the 1st century B.C. were looking for their political savior (Dan. 9:25; Artaxerxes, 444 B.C.—483 years to Messiah). Because Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead a couple weeks earlier, thousands followed him as they expected him to start ruling as the Messiah (John 11:38-44). As Jesus was nearing Jerusalem, he stopped at the house of Simon where his friends Lazarus, Mary, and Martha were throwing him a party. Jesus had friends but was not friends with everyone! True friends do life together and will reciprocate your care for them, often better than family (Prov. 17:17; 18:24; 27:10; John 15:13).
