Boaz, who was probably middle-aged, was a single, wealthy, respected land owner, and had a reputation for being godly. From all outward accounts, Boaz was being blessed by God and did not need to add any relational or financial burdens to his life. Possibly from loneliness, a desire for children, a sense of duty, or a mixture of them all, Boaz chose to step into the challenges of Ruth’s life and redeem her situation. Often, the greatest challenges can yield the greatest reward. Given Ruth’s background and the levirate marriage where the first son was raised to honor the dead husband, the marriage of Boaz and Ruth probably had many hard times. Bringing Ruth into his life created the possibility for difficulty, but also the probability of blessing. Satisfaction in life doesn’t come from the safety of the stands, but from the struggle in the sport. Obed’s birth signaled God’s approval of the redemption by Boaz, confirmation of Ruth’s character, and grace for Naomi, who came from Moab empty and bitter, but was now filled with joy. Unplanned choices of kindness and virtue can bless our lives and others in the unknown future!
