Psalm 119 is the high-water mark of all the Psalms and
throughout scripture for understanding the value of God’s word.
The
lyrics are written in an acrostic pattern of 22 stanzas with 8
lines,
each stanza starting with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet in
sequence.
Despite God’s Spirit being everywhere (omnipresence), and His
personal presence being inside a believer’s life, God gave His
word
to guide humanity (Lev. 26:12; Jer. 23:23, 24; John 14:23; 2
Tim.
3:16, 17). God’s word is given as the objective truth-standard, so
we
don’t rely on opinions, desires, or our feelings (John 17:17)!
God’s
word is described as law (Heb. torah, ‘instruction’),
testimonies
(Heb. ‘edot, ‘witness of divine will’), precepts (Heb. piqqudim,
‘a
mandate’), statues (Heb. khuqqim, ‘something prescribed’),
commandments (Heb. mitsvah, ‘what is ordered to be done’),
rules
(Heb. mishpatim, ‘what is given as right’). God’s word is God’s
will!
