After spending the majority of his ministry within the borders of Israel to the Jews, Jesus goes north to the Gentile region of Tyre and Sidon by the Mediterranean Sea. These two cities were wealthy, coastal shipping ports. They were heavily influenced by sailors and merchants who brought their sinful lifestyles and cultic practices from all over the world. The darker the time, the brighter the light shines! While there, Jesus meets a local woman with a demonically possessed daughter. Though this Canaanite (‘pagan person of the land’) has many religious options like the temple of Eshmun, who is a local god of healing, nothing she has done has worked. Lostness can propel people to seek a way out of being lost (Acts 17:26, 27).
